The College of Charleston is the oldest municipal college in the United States, and a National Historic Landmark. Founded in 1770, and chartered in 1785, the College possesses additional historical significance as the oldest institute of higher learning in South Carolina, and the 13th oldest in the country.

In “Charleston’s Timeless Treasure,” ghostly images of students mill about outside of Randolph Hall, the college’s first classroom building. Randolph Hall was constructed from 1828 to 1830 and later named for Harrison Randolph in 1972, who served as the college’s president from 1897 to 1945.
