Generations of Dedication
For 95 years, generations of dedicated men and women reported to the Charleston Naval Shipyard. During their employment, they forged friendships and formed loyalties.
The closing of the shipyard brought uncertainty for many and retirement for others. They all had to say goodbye to their “port by the sea.” The shipyard’s cranes, drydocks, ships, submarines, and buildings were a part of the landscape. The iconic powerhouse smokestack was dismantled and changed the skyline forever. A feeling of loss permeated the hearts of all and symbolized the end of an era.
